There’s so much talk about processed foods for adults, but babies?
One of the most troubling things found in our grocery stores are processed foods. What makes that even more difficult to digest is that the baby food aisle is one of the worst offenders. These precious little children are needing the best start possible for their young lives and big food companies are advertising constantly hoping to draw you straight to their product when you enter the grocery store. What they don’t tell you is that they are producing those baby foods with ingredients that are a recipe for disaster.
Take this for instance: Researches in 2009 found that several baby food items had more sugar and saturated fat than commercial chocolates and a major fast food cheeseburger. In fact, the report proved that the cheeseburger and chocolate were actually healthier than baby food. Let that sink in for a few minutes.
Genetically modified foods are also making their way into baby foods, thanks to the always changing food manufacturing practices that exist with the FDA’s blessing. The best way to know what is going into your baby is with breast milk and making your own baby food at home.
While that’s not always the case, The Center for Food Safety has these tips for parents:
If you can’t puree fresh products on a daily basis, try these suggestions:
Some baby cereals can have GE ingredients even if the primary component is GE-free. For example, some rice cereals add soy lecithin as an emulsifier, which can be processed from GE soy.
Look for cereals with one or a few ingredients, or make your own. Buy a new coffee grinder. Grind rice and other grains for simple, homemade baby cereals.
Teething crackers and biscuits can contain GE corn syrup and soy lecithin.
Food for older babies and toddlers, such as noodles and cheese, often contain processed ingredients derived from genetically engineered sources.
These days even some non-organic brands such as Gerber have pledged to avoid GE ingredients in all of their baby foods.
Your child needs the best start possible! They will soon face the world of processed and fast food that will be at their fingertips. Ensuring the best start possible will hopefully put them on the path to a long and healthy life!
